Accountability Reporter

The Salt Lake Tribune

This is a Full-time position in Salt Lake City, UT posted May 3, 2021.

Journalists at The Salt Lake Tribune are committed to holding those in positions of power to account, and we are adding to our team of reporters who do this work.

If you value exposing corruption and wrongdoing, read on
– and consider joining our nonprofit, Pulitzer-Prize winning news organization.

The Tribune, which serves readers across the fast-growing state of Utah, serves as a watchdog to institutions that include state and local governments, businesses, law enforcement, those with power and others.

As an accountability reporter, you will dive in on the biggest stories of the day, and break stories that set the news agenda and push the news cycle.

This may mean you’re working on how publicly-funded projects one week and another you’re examining the relationships of those in power and how their decisions impact everyday Utahns.

We are looking for a reporter who understands the opportunity to publish quick-turnaround pieces as well as longer-term efforts.

This work is too critical to share infrequently and we will look to practice rolling thunder, or regular reporting on topics of significant interest and import.

You will be skilled in obtaining public records and also comfortable obtaining and analyzing data sets.

As a self-starter, you will also story plan with your editor and be flexible to move where the reporting takes you.

You are comfortable in a collaborative setting, co-bylining stories with other reporters and working with visual journalists and digital team members.

You must have a strong grounding in journalism ethics.

You must have a proven ability to build reader loyalty and engagement through public service journalism.

And you must seek to understand every day what is important to Utahns as you look to shape your reporting efforts.

Responsibilities include:

Writing news stories on tight deadlines with clarity, accuracy and compelling storytelling.

Maintaining a schedule that allows for both quick-turn stories and the ability to work on longer-term projects.

Development of a broad range of sources on beats or across topics.

Mastery of social media
– both as a news-gathering tool and as a way to push the news out quickly and build our audience, as well as your own brand.

Understanding audience data
– which of your stories are resonating with readers and which are not?

Working with other newsroom leaders to determine best practices moving forward.

Write and report on a continuous-news cycle, publishing to digital platforms as well as print.

Seeking support to determine best digital tools for conveying news to readers in varying circumstances.

Engage the public: Present events, news coverage and enterprise/public service reporting in a manner in which readers understand the need for action/involvement.

Use social networks to seek story ideas, report in real time and connect with the community.

Help formulate goals and actively seek to meet them.

Participate in training sessions offered and seek learning opportunities.

Skills
At least 3 years of accountability reporting experience.

A demonstrated commitment to fairness and accuracy.

Experience in filing and tracking open records requests and the ability to interpret complex documents.

The ability to enter and analyze multiple data points using Excel/Google Sheets and other analytical tools.

Strong interpersonal skills, including empathy and the ability to take and give constructive criticism.

Work with visuals team to add more sophisticated visuals as a fundamental story-telling tool.

The ability to capture basic photos in the field.

The ability to report in multiple formats
– short-form, long-form, narrative, hard news and features.

Expert-level research skills in using digital research tools to find information.

Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues in developing and executing long
– and short-term projects.

Command of grammar, spelling and AP style, as well as clear skills in story organization and concise, vibrant writing.

Education and knowledge: College degree and at least three years of digital journalism experience required.
