Health Technician

This is a Part-time position in Salt Lake City, UT posted May 1, 2021.

Summary The primary purpose of this position is to perform a very wide range of patient personal care, diagnostic services, treatment, administrative and charting activities on a surgical, medical, neurological, rehabilitation, or psychiatric inpatient unit.

The incumbent performs duties in such a way as to encourage patient efforts towards goals for recovery and maintain a safe and therapeutic environment while promoting a sense of worth and dignity for the patient.

Responsibilities Determines technical factors, sets controls and operates equipment, instruments and monitors.

Uses phones, patient lift equipment, and camera monitoring system/call system/panic alarm system.

Recognizes abnormalities and brings them to the attention of the RN.

Notifies RN of results and ensures original results are made part of the permanent record.

Maintain administrative and clinical files.

Uses equipment properly such as vital sign machines, EKG, bladder scan, AED etc.

Maintains a therapeutic and safe ward milieu by identifying, reporting and eliminating potential hazards.

Completes unit rounds and patient safety checks.

Completes hazardous items checks of unit, patients, and their belongings.

Performs one-to-one observations of patients.

Conducts monitoring of unit and patients.

Identifies patient at risk for suicide/self-harm, falls, disruptive behavior etc.

Places patients in seclusion and/or restraints as directed, to ensure the safety of patient and/or staff.

Takes emergency actions in all situations, ex: cardio-pulmonary arrests, Disruptive Behavior incidents, fires, disasters etc.

Receives and directs patients, answers routine inquiries and makes referrals.

Assists patients, visitors and others requesting information, guidance or referral for special assistance.

Participates in the admission of patients by obtaining information, orienting patients to the unit and treatment team, obtaining vital signs and weight and checking patients and their belongings for hazardous items.

Assists physicians and nurses in the care and treatment of clients receiving medical care.

Observes, documents, and reports to the professional nurse changes in patient behavior, attitude, physical complaints, appearance, vital signs and/or changes in the patients’ condition that may be related to medications, sensory distortions or medical conditions.

Performs standard diagnostic tests or procedures (in accordance with Nursing Procedure grid) such as removing peripheral IVs, electrocardiograms, bladder scan, venipuncture for collection of blood specimen, finger-sticks for glucose determination.

Assists the professional nurse and medical staff with specialized procedures: biopsy, lumbar puncture, electroconvulsive therapy etc.

Performs more extensive, complex procedures, ex: dressing changes, insertion of foley catheter.

Receives requests or instructions for procedures.

Interprets requests or instructions from medical or health care personnel.

Encourages patient and family to actively participate in the individualized treatment plan.

Gives patient and family after-care instructions.

Follows designated charting techniques to post patient charts that provide an outline or summary of patients’ care.

Documents pertinent information including current health status and subtle changes in patients’ status.

Provides general clerical administrative support coordination work for the unit.

Maintains patient records/charts.

Obtains key information needed to walk-in and initiate medical administrative processing of requests and forms.

Updates unit forms and/or worksheets.

Orders and maintains supplies for the unit.

Assists in orienting personnel to the clinical area including proper clinical procedures.

Answers telephone and directs call to the appropriate person/area.

Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

For a GS-05 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-04.

The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service.

An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials.

If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement.

In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade.

Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.

You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: Grade Determinations: Individual Occupational Requirements Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-4 and above): Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists.

Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled.

GS-05: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-04 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization.

Specialized experience includes; prior health care experience and familiarity with CPRS/Vista; Assists physicians and nurses in the care and treatment of clients receiving medical care; Observes, documents, and reports changes in patient behavior, attitude, physical complaints, appearance, vital signs and/or changes in the patients’ condition; Delivers meals and /or snacks to patients; Accompanies/escorts patients on activities and to appointments; Provides general clerical administrative support; Maintains patient records/charts; Answers telephone and directs calls.

OR Have a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor’s degree with courses related to the occupation.

OR Have a combination of education and specialized experience as describe as above.

Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.

Physical Requirements: The work requires regular recurring periods of sitting, standing, and walking throughout the unit.

The work also requires occasional turning and/or lifting of specific patients.

The employee assists with protecting patients, self and other team members from physical harm by agitated, hostile and/or confused patients by therapeutically applying physical restraints, which may require stooping, bending and stretching.
